“Why can’t I just get it together already?”

You’re an adult – or at least you’re supposed to be – but you just can’t get the hang of this adulting business. You’re supposed to be able to buckle down and get your work done or remember to take out the trash (or feed the cat) but somehow these all feel much more difficult than you think they should be.

You know you have responsibilities and WANT to meet your own and others’ expectations of you but cannot figure out how to do it – at least not consistently. One day, you feel like you’ve figured out some strategies that help but good luck sticking to them. You’re tired of feeling like you’ve tried your best but it’s not quite enough.

Adult ADHD affects multiple areas of your life.

It’s not just your imagination. Others – your boss, your family, your friends – are also frustrated with your inability to follow through, be on time, get things done, or remember what they’ve told you. They might think you don’t care but nothing could be further from the truth. They also don’t really know how hard these “simple” tasks are for you.

You dread the next performance review at work or the inevitable lecture from your family. You don’t bother making plans with friends because you don’t want to let them down again by forgetting or being late. It’s easier to just avoid all these nagging feelings and tasks because if you’re going to be criticized about it anyway, why bother?

Not that this is anything new – you’ve always felt like this – but it’s just getting too hard to manage on your own anymore.

Is it possible you have Adult ADHD? Were you diagnosed as a child but thought you’d outgrow it? Is there any way it will get better?

LIFE CAN BE DIFFERENT FOR YOU

Things can get better: there is help for Adult ADHD

Imagine yourself starting to get things done on time and meeting expectations more often. What if you could see your effort translating into results? You could start conquering formerly overwhelming tasks and situations. You’d begin to feel more confident in yourself and in your ability to manage your life.

This doesn’t have to be a dream.  Working together with the help of an evidence-based treatment program designed specifically for adults with ADHD, we can make these wishes become reality. We will focus on developing skills that help with organization and planning. We’ll explore ways to reduce distractibility and make your environment work for you.

We’ll also work on adaptive thinking skills to help address thoughts and feelings that have developed after years of struggle and instead find ways to think more clearly about solving problems. We can explore the process of accepting the challenges of adult ADHD and discovering your unique strengths.

Frequently asked questions about therapy FOR ADULT ADHD

FAQs

  • As a clinical social worker, I am not able to prescribe medication for ADHD. I work collaboratively with psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse prescribers (i.e. nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists) to coordinate care if it looks like you might benefit from medication.. Learn more.

  • Medications for ADHD work for many adults but some people are not able to tolerate them or don’t find them to be effective. Regardless of whether or not you take ADHD medication, learning organizational, executive functioning and coping skills can benefit you and help you manage your life with ADHD. Pills don’t teach skills – at least not on their own – so there is still work that has to be done whether or not medication is part of the plan. Learn more.

  • I do not provide neuropsychological testing for ADHD. I do use screening tools that are useful in determining the probability of an ADHD diagnosis and that can help track symptoms. Learn more.

  • Many adults – often women – realize later in life that they may have ADHD. Sometimes this happens after their children are diagnosed or when they become overwhelmed by stressors and can no longer mask symptoms. Because ADHD was thought of as a disorder impacting hyperactive boys, many girls and boys with more inattentive symptoms were not diagnosed as children.

Whether or not you have a formal ADHD diagnosis, our work together can help you improve executive functioning and organizational skills. We can also explore and problem-solve around how challenges caused by possible ADHD symptoms are impacting your life. ADHD, especially in adulthood, often coexists with other disorders, including addiction, anxiety, and depression. Learn more
